A Razor's Edge

Doors and Drawers

Description: Whether you are refurbishing existing cabinets or building from scratch, the doors and drawers showcase your project. This two day class centers on cabinet door and drawer design elements and joinery techniques. The first day will be devoted to cabinet doors. We will discuss factors that influence our door design decisions and examine joinery methods for overlay and inset doors, including flat panel, raised panel, and solid doors. Next we will scrutinize joinery techniques for dowel pin, half lap, bridle joint, and cope & stick frames as well as panel raising options.Finally we will build a prototype raised panel door and as time permits, we will discuss hinge choices and methods for hanging and adjusting the doors. On the second day, we will discuss drawer design, material choices and create examples of the most popular drawer box joinery. We will construct a prototype drawer using typical drawer construction techniques. As time permits, we will discuss drawer hardware choices, how to choose and mount slides, and how to install drawer pulls. The fundamental procedures learned in this class will prepare you for your next cabinet project.

Crushed Stone Inlay

Description: Jim will demonstrate the turning and preparing of a lidded box for embelishment with crushed stone inlay. He will teach us the technique for inlaying the edge of a bowl and the flat of the lid similar to a plate. The class will be hands on, and Jim will cover where to buy the stone, how to crush it, grade it, inlay it, sand, and finnish it. There will be a morning and afternoon session, so you can take the morning session and then stay for more assisted practice, or take either and practice at home.
